Destiny Alpha Gameplay of the Hunter Class

Hey, just a quick note to let folks know that I've posted a gameplay video (a long one) of the Hunter class going through the first mission in Destiny's Alpha. If there is any interest, I might post a video going through the same mission with another one of the classes. I'm thinking Warlock, just to see who the style of play varies.

Check it out and let me know what you think of the game so far. Are you in the alpha? How do you feel about Destiny?

Battlefield: Hardline Beta First Video and First Thoughts on the Game

Hello people. Long time no blog on my part, mostly because I've been insanely busy with just a couple of hours of sleep each night and... well, you don't want to hear my troubles. What you do want to know about is Battlefield: Hardline.

I've spent a number of hours with it at this point, and I've put up my first in what will be a series of videos on the game's beta, which you can view below.

Here's the very short of it (I think I'll go into deeper detail in later videos and posts):

  • I like the two game modes in the beta. Blood Money and Heist are both fun and they feel different, yet similar enough to other modes in BF4 that I think they should make most people happy and comfortable, while providing a bit of a new experience.
  • I like the focus on infantry style combat, and the fact that you have the means to dispose of most vehicles even if you aren't the mechanic class.
  • I like the weapons. They feel good, provide quick kill times, and it's possible to "get good" with most of them. Although, I haven't spent much time with the professional/recon class, and I don't really use shotguns for the enforcer/support class because I feel shotguns require far less skill. I know a lot of folks out there like them and more power to those guys and gals. I just don't use them except to get the occasional unlocks.
  • I don't like the Survival revive tool. It lets people who are in the assault class carry a gadget with them that revives them after they go down. It's a terrible feature that will lead to some frustrating moments, and it does nothing to promote team play.
  • I don't like how whisper quiet all of the vehicles are. Players can't hear anything as vehicles barrel toward them, making road kills too easy... although they are still fun.

Now, these are just some of my likes and dislikes. I've also found that it's possible for teammates, or enemies for that matter, to crawl into the back of the trucks and hide when playing Blood Money. I don't know if this is meant to be part of the gameplay mechanic or if it's a flub, but it gives folks some nasty surprises.

Anyway, I should have much more on this game, and others (including the Destiny Alpha) sooner rather than later, and I'll try my best to update this blog regularly. It's hard being a one man army! : )

What about you? Are you in the beta? How do you like it? Let me know in the comments!!

Titanfall: Prepare for Titanfart - Tips for Using Electric Smoke

Hello!

I've been playing quite a lot of Titanfall lately, and I've gotta say it's certainly one of my favorites. Everything feels nice and smooth, and it's one FPS where I can actually do fairly well - shocking, I know.

Anyway, I've found a technique that I really like using to take down the Titans. They call it Electric Smoke. I call it Titanfart. Check out the video below so you can see the Titanfart in action.

So, what are your favorite ways to take down the Titans? I'm getting ready to re-gen, and I'm looking for some different techniques to try, so feel free to leave a couple of ideas in the comments for me.

Hello!

Here's a quick post of some of the most recent videos over on my YouTube channel, A Geek on Games. Do me a favor and check the out, like, subscribe, and leave some comments on what else you might want to see. Feel free to share the videos too.

Battlefield 4 DLC: Naval Strike - Lost Islands Shark

Well, guess what I found on the Lost Islands map last night! That's right, as you've cleverly deciphered from the title, I found a shark and here's the video below.

Of course, before that, I'd like to let you all know that it looks like our friends lag and rubberband have made their way to these maps. The Carrier Assault mode is fun, and I really want to enjoy it, but the large maps for CA and Conquest have loads of lag. Rush gameplay was better, but still not fully lag free for me. They really need to figure out what to do about that.

Infamous: Second Son First Video Up on YouTube

Hello! I've put up my first Infamous: Second Son video on YouTube of Delsin climbing the Space Needle in Seattle and doing battle with some nefarious soldiers. There's no commentary on the video, just straight gameplay.

I was going to do a Let's Play of the entire game, but I don't think I will. There are quite a few cut scenes, and I imagine there will be a lot of other videos just like it already up. Instead, I think I'll just record some random cool bits and put those on YouTube. What do you think?

Anyhow, here's the Space Needle climb in Second Son!

Naval Strike is Coming March 25

Well, as I've mentioned, I've been back to Battlefield after my ill-fated attempt following the last update. Things are a bit better, but there's still some trouble with lagging, particularly on Rubber Band Dam, er, I mean Langang Dam, but I'm done complaining for now. When this game works, it's phenomenal and easily one of the best experiences in games, at least for me. I should celebrate the good as much as I shame the bad.

So, for a bit of good news, the new DLC, Naval Strike, comes out March 25 for Premium members such as myself and two weeks later for the rest of the Battlefield world.

It looks fun, as you can see from the trailer below. I don't spend too much time in boats in the game thus far, so this looks like it will be a challenge, especially since boats tend to hunt me down in BF4. I swear, if it weren't for vehicles and recon, I wouldn't die nearly as often... what is it with people in vehicles chasing and hunting infantry instead of taking on other vehicles?

And I will be making plenty of videos to put up for Naval Strike, as well as other BF4 gameplay.

Anyway, check out the trailer here:

Videos of Plants vs. Zombies and More Nearly Ready

Just a real quick update - the new Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare video, this one featuring the plant characters, is nearly ready. It's recorded, edited, and just waiting for me to do some commentary and then to render and upload through YouTube. I'm aiming to get it up tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

Other videos are coming soon as well... I just need to have more hours in the day to get that and my regular freelancing work done!

Batman Sucker Punched Me

Last week, Rocksteady released a cinematic teaser trailer for the new Batman video game Arkham Knight, which seemed to come out of the blue. I knew (or at least I thought I knew) that the company was working on a new game, but I didn’t figure they would say anything about it until E3. I’m happy that they did. It was a nice surprise.

Perhaps the biggest news is that the Batmobile will be in the game, and players will be driving it. In fact, developers say that it will be an important part of gameplay. I’ll be interested to see how this changes things for good (or bad).

Something else I’ve gathered from the trailer is that it looks like we’re going to get another nearly empty Gotham in terms of citizens on the street.  The only reason I say this is that the trailer shows people fleeing and villains taking over.  I might be wrong….

Anyhow, this trailer does get me excited, even though it’s still early. This was only a cinematic trailer, but it certainly got me excited.

I’ve included the trailer here for all three of you who haven’t seen it. Let me know what you think!

Wanna Join My BF4 Platoon - The Bay Harbor Butchers?

Okay, so I've been back to the Battlefield, despite the glitches I suffered on my last outing. It's not perfect, but I've not had nearly the amount of issues I did before. Still some lag sometimes and whatnot, but it's not killing the game for me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

So, I created a platoon that's open to just about anyone who wants to join, so long as he/she is not a total a$$hole. It doesn't matter if you are a crack shot or that you are great at the game. I'm looking for the Bad News Bears, the Dirty Dozen, the guys and gals who aren't the best (because I'm certainly not). AGOG just wants to have fun!

Just click here to apply: [AGOG] Bay Harbor Butchers

I'm DMorgan10B on Battlelog and PS4. If you have trouble applying, shoot me an email through the contact page here.

Yes, this adorable image is the platoon symbol for the Bay Harbor Butchers... you know you want to join. Just imagine the look on peoples' face when they see that they were killed by this cute (and dangerous, don't forget dangerous) little fellow.

New Videos Coming Soon

Just a quick note to let anyone interested know that I should have several new videos coming to YouTube very soon - by the end of the weekend hopefully.

  • The next installment of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare that focuses on the plant classes will be going up. I may also include some straight-up gameplay videos.
  • Battlefield 4 - I'm heading back in and seeing if I can avoid some of the bugs, glitches and lags introduced to me in the last patch. Hopefully, things will smooth out because I'm a sucker for this game. I might even do some live commentary for these - just trying to figure out how to make it still sound good.
  • Here's something I never thought I would say (because I'm worse at this game than any of the others), but I might even be putting up a COD: Ghosts video of Gun Game, which is a whole lot of fun. It's crazy, hectic, and sometimes, I don't come in last... sometimes.
  • Who knows? I might have some other stuff, but it all depends on how much time I can spend working on it.
As always, let me know what you want to see, and I'll try to get it to you.

Latest BF4 Patch on PS4 Made the Game Worse

UPDATE: Here's an oddity. I haven't played the game today at all, but decided to check the Battlelog site to change a loadout, and wouldn't you know it, my score dropped another two points... how the hell did that happen? Did someone F@#$ing snipe me in Battlelog? Da Fuq! (and I'm generally a relaxed dude about these things). Graaaaaawhr, I don't want to become an Internet doofus that complains about everything.

Original:

Anyone who has read many of the posts on this admittedly very new site knows that I enjoy Battlefield 4. I've been playing on the PS4, and I've been fortunate enough to suffer through very few issues and errors besides a bit of occasional rubber-banding and getting killed by folks with 0 health from time to time.

The latest patch from DICE that claimed they would be fixing a number of errors/issues/and glitches... well, that hasn't been my experience, as you will see.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare Video is Live!

Hello, the first Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare video is now up on YouTube. You can watch it right here, and once you finish, I'd really appreciate if you could subscribe, like, or leave a comment. Tell friends, family, even your enemies! We're still a new channel and need all the support we can get.

As a bonus (well, I think of it as a bonus), I've added another video featuring a weird little glitch from Battlefield 4.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is a Blast!

I've been playing some Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare today, and I've got to tell you that even though this might seem like a cutesy game (and it is), it's still a hell of a lot of fun to play. It's silly, fun, and seems casual, but there is enough depth to keep me interested.

I've recorded some of my play on the Xbox 360, and will be editing and uploading it Sunday afternoon/evening.

I'll give you more of my thoughts on the game later, and I'll let folks who read the site know when the video goes live if they'd like to watch. I also have some more Battlefield 4 stuff to edit and put up on YouTube.

Until then, enjoy this purty picture.

Blacklight: Retribution Update

There's a new update for Blacklight: Retribution, and it promises to fix some of the things that I had a gripe with, namely framerate issues and faster loading times. They've also added two new maps - Decay and Metro.

I'm hoping this update really does fix things, as I really want to like this game.

I will add videos of these two new maps, as well as my thoughts on whether there really are improvements, in the next few days.

If you've had a chance to download the update and play, let us know in the comments!

The Humor of Battlefield 4... Well, I Find These Funny

Here’s a somewhat humorous and true look at what happens in Battlefield 4… all the damned time.

  1. Get Hunted by Vehicles! Where Do I Sign Up? - When you play infantry, tanks and helicopters will find you and hunt you down relentlessly. I’ve had a helicopter hunt me and follow me for a good ten minutes, while engineers on my team just run on by and don’t even attempt to take the helicopter out. Helicopters on my team don’t even try to take it out. They are all busy hunting their own infantry for easy kills. I've engaged a tank in a game of "Benny Hill runabout" on Silk Road where we just continued to circle a boulder.
  2. I Need a Medic! – I often play as the assault class, which is really the combat medic. I do my best to support my team by tossing down med-kits and reviving fallen comrades. However, for every fifty med-kits and/or revives I’m dishing out, it seems I receive one revive. And in the 70+ hours of the game I’ve played, I’ve only received a handful of med-kits. This is no problem when I’m playing assault class since I can toss down my own, but this number never rises even when I’m playing the other classes.
  3. Everyone is Mute – I have a headset hooked up to the PS4, naturally. The few times I tried to speak with a squad, people don’t say anything. They get nervous (eek, people!) and unplug their headset… and that’s fine. Sometimes, I don’t want to speak either, but I imagine working in an actual squad would be beneficial.
  4. It’s All So Quiet –When it’s quiet… too quiet… some shit’s about to go down and you are about to be killed. As soon as I say, hey, where is everyone, an LAV or attack boat shoots me in my face.
  5. Someone is Behind You… Always – On the same note as #4, just keep in mind that someone is always behind you and ready to shoot you or stab you. Because those mudda luvas are always there.
  6. Dear Dude in the Bush... Da Fuq? – Quite often, I see someone standing in a bush and doing a terrible job of hiding… or something. I don’t know what they are doing. I don’t know if they are suffering from digital PTSD or taking a leak or what, but I just wanted to let them know that we can see them. The only place I haven't seen one of these stealthy ninja cats is on Operation Locker, but you know the bush baby sumbitch is on the lookout for a bush in there.
  7. I Die… Stupidly – Okay, I can complain about other problems, but it’s only fair that I complain about myself as well. I have some of the stupidest deaths ever, mostly when I’m feeling confident. Lesson to self – never feel confident. Also, don't hide in a bush.

Still, I can’t quit the game. I love it too much, even when vehicles stalk me. And those times when you are standing beside your (mute) teammates and everyone is just doing everything right, even without communication, is glorious.

Anyway, if you are on PS4 and want to add me as a friend, that’s cool. Maybe we can even work as a squad… although I warn you that I am not good, not good at all.

We’ll get into my name choice in another post.

First Real Battlefield Video Coming Soon... Maybe Tonight

Well, everything is in place - PS4, Elgato, splitter, microphone, pop filter, etc. I've recorded my first true Battlefield video (don't worry; I'll be doing more than just Battlefield). After I finish freelance work for the day, I'll record the commentary for the video and put it up on YouTube. I'll add a post and a link on this blog as soon as it goes up!

Have a great day, folks!

BTW - Go watch the Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer!

I Can't Freaking Wait for Guardians of the Galaxy

I know this has been, and will be, everywhere, but I don't care. I'm adding it here too. To say I am extremely excited about this movie would be a massive understatement.. I haven't wanted to see a movie this bad in a long time. I've loved everything James Gunn has ever done, and as soon as I heard he was writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy, I knew it was going to be gold. I was just hoping Marvel wouldn't handicap Gunn's style and sense of humor, and it looks as though they gave him free reign to make the movie he wanted. That's very good for us.

It's got everything you could want. Humor, action, and a gun-toting raccoon... you gotta love it. I could keep gushing, and I probably will as more details come out about the movie, but I'll stop for now.... Watch the GOTG trailer, keep watching it, and download "Hooked on a Feeling".

What’s Your Favorite Video Game Theme Song?

I feel that music is one of the most important elements of video games. The in-game music and the theme music can elicit feelings and emotions that help add to the story or that simply get people “pumped up” to play the game. Of course, some game themes seem to resonate more than others do, at least for me. This got me thinking about some of my favorite game themes of all time.

Here is my top five… and I’m sure I’m missing tons of great ones. I’m equally sure that not everyone is going to agree with my opinion, so feel free to leave your favorites in the comments!

Here are mine in no particular order.

1.    Super Mario Bros.
2.    The Legend of Zelda
3.    Theme from Skyrim
4.    Halo
5.    Castlevania: Simon’s Quest

Even as I’m writing this, I can think of others that I want to add! But, for right now, I’m sticking with these as being my most memorable. I might revisit this post again in the future.

Later! And please leave your own favorites in the comments.

Hey, Internets! Almost Time for Videos on the YouTube!

Well, I wanted to let folks know that I'm getting closer and closer to getting everything up and running on my YouTube channel.

I finish the intro I'm going to use for the videos. The Elgato is here, and I'm fiddling around with that. I've got a Blue Yeti microphone, and I'm just waiting for the HDMI splitter so I can record from the PS4. I'm practicing with some old games on the 360 right now, and I might upload a video or two just to see how things look.

Should be fun!

I will add a link for the channel once things are up in case anyone wants to head over and subscribe.

Here are some of the games that I plan on recording and putting up in the next couple of weeks. Let me know if there are any other upcoming games that you think might be fun to see. These are just the PS4 games. I'm still considering some 360 stuff as well.

  • Battlefield 4 (even with the flaws, I just can't get enough of this game. I'm getting better, but I'm still pretty terrible. If you like watching an underdog, then you will want to watch these videos where I will very likely get my ass handed to me quite often).
  • Outlast (I write a lot of horror fiction and I love paranormal topics and whatnot. I don't scare easily. However, I startle like a tiny bunny, so this game will probably unnerve me a bit).
  • Infamous: Second Son (holy super balls, I'm looking forward to playing this, and I hope it meets my expectations).
  • COD: Ghosts (maybe... I'm worse at this game than I am at Battlefield, but it might be fun to show just how terrible I am).
Of course, as new games come out, I'll be adding those as well - either "let's play" videos or commentary over them. It's all new right now, and I'm open to suggestions.

Later!

What Are These Lights in Battlefield 4?

Okay, while playing Battlefield 4 a couple of nights ago on the PS4, I saw this on the Paracel Storm map during a game of Conquest. What are these lights?  I'm still relatively new to the game, so I might be missing something that everyone else already knows.

My current thought it that it's ancient aliens because everything is the fault of ancient aliens. True story. Perhaps they are the ones resurrecting enemy soldiers, thus turning them into undead killing machines, which is why I'm still being killed by people with 0 health. These aliens may also give the enemy all those nifty superpowers so they can shoot me through mountains and from across the map with assault rifles.

Or not.

If you know what this light is (I've only seen it once), let me know! I'm off to do research.

UPDATE: I'm not crazy. Others have seen it too. Still don't know how to make it happen though. See this video from One Handed Gamer.

Evolve Looks Great

I just saw two videos - the trailer for Evolve, and the gameplay footage from IGN. Right now, it looks pretty damned cool, especially when you are the monster. Only time will tell, but I'm feeling pretty optimistic about the game, which is slated for a Fall 2014 release.

I've embedded the videos for you below:

Where the Hell (or What the Hell) is Leetle Beach?

Ah, yes, Leetle Beach.

I’ve heard quite a bit about this “beach” over the course of my fledgling multiplayer experience. Lot’s of guys with thick accents were telling me about it in loud and somewhat angry voices while playing multiplayer Blacklight and COD: Ghosts.

I wondered where this wonderful and magical place was that all of these players were telling me about.

It sounded so glorious and relaxing! Hell yes I wanted to go to Leetle Beach. Who wouldn’t? I imagined tropical drinks and white sand and every console and game on the planet.

All of those “super friendly” players started hollering about Leetle Beach right after I killed them, or they killed me.

Odd.

They’d say things like, “Hey, hey, Leetle Beach”, and “You, Leetle Beech”.

All of these friendly fellows with rough English seemed to want me to head to the beach. Maybe they wanted me to get out and enjoy my day. It was so very friendly of them.

Just take a moment to think about how glorious it would be….

Now before people think I’m crazy or an idiot, I do know what Leetle Beach means. It’s rough English for Little Bitch, naturally. I just think it’s funny as hell that Leetle Beach is so many peoples’ go to insult when gaming. I had no less than seven people say it to me over about a month on multiplayer.

I just smile and laugh because really it’s quite funny when you think about it.

Still… I can’t help but think that Leetle Beach is actually this great place where gamers go to relax and actually get some sun, and all of those guys were really trying to tell me about how awesome it is, but I couldn't understand them. In my mind, that’s what it will always be.

So, have you ever been told about this awesome beach?

Battlefield 4 Test Video

Here's a quick (very quick) test video I did with the PS4, just to see if it was feasible to upload it to YouTube. With a bit of finagling, it is.

This is just a test, but it gives an idea of the quality that the system can offer when uploading. Plus, it gives me a chance to learn how to do all of this stuff so I can get better at recording videos down the line.

My 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2014

Everyone else is doing it, and I’m a sucker for peer pressure, so I thought I would write a list of my most anticipated games of 2014 (thus far). So, what is it that has me agog (see what I did there) this year? Let’s see.

In no particular order...
  1. Infamous: Second Son
  2. Dying Light
  3. Dragon Age: Inquisition
  4. Destiny
  5. Elder Scrolls Online
  6. The Order: 1886
  7. Deep Down
  8. Watch Dogs
  9. The Division
  10. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt

I’ll probably cover each of these in a bit more depth as they get nearer to release.

Now, I realize there’s a good chance that some, or many, of these titles might get pushed back into 2015. But these are the ones that I’m looking most forward to right now.

What are you looking forward to the most, and what did I overlook?

Battlefield 4 Player Appreciation Month is Live

If you haven't signed in to play Battlefield 4 in a while, now is the day to gear up and head back to the battlefield. It's Battlefield 4 Player Appreciation Month! What does this mean for players? It means some free stuff mostly, and free is usually good.

They are giving away Bronze Battlepacks during the week and Silver Battlepacks on the weekend, as well as shortcut kits, community missions, and more.

Given some of the technical issues that have plagued Battlefield 4 since launch, the regular updates and the Battlefield 4 Player Appreciation Month should help to salve at least some of the damage caused in those initial months. Still, there are very likely plenty of angry gamers out there.

As for me, I'm happy with the game for the most part. Although, I've had my save file wiped from the single player campaign four times now, and I don't think I'm going to try to get through it again.

First Foray into Multiplayer: Part Three - Battlefield 4

In Part One, we looked at Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Blacklight: Retribution. In Part Two, we looked at Call of Duty: Ghosts. Now, we'll get into Battlefield 4

People often compare COD and the Battlefield franchise, but these games are worlds apart when it comes to multiplayer. Okay, the single-player games are similar, but that’s expected. The multiplayer area is where where things really diverge.

What Makes the Multiplayer Special?

Battlefield offers huge playground where nearly anything can happen. You can create your own stories. Even though I’m terrible at gaming, I’ve done some cool things here.

My team was getting sniped from the top of the tallest structure on the Rogue Transmission map. I was able to climb all the way up to the top of the tower without getting shot, snuck up behind the two snipers and killed them. I then leapt off the top of the tower and opened my parachute at the last minute. I landed in front of an enemy LAV, which was about to destroy me when an engineer from my team destroyed it. All of this was unplanned. It just happened.

That’s just one of the stories that shows the magic of Battlefield. These sorts of things happen with regularity in these matches.

Once you get used to the gunplay and the different classes (I like playing Assault class), it’s a blast, and I highly recommend it – even to people who don’t usually like to play multiplayer.

One of the only things that is frustrating is getting killed by vehicles – I’ve been hunted by tanks and helicopters, but even that is sort of fun, at least when I can get away from them. I’m also not a big fan of getting owned by recon snipers from halfway across the map, but that’s part of the game too. The other times I did (and I die a lot in this game), it’s because I made a mistake or got outplayed by better players. I like that. It makes me strive to be better.

The Bugs

What about all those bugs and other issues everyone is talking about? Well, I think I’ve been fortunate because I haven’t really encountered too many issues.

Sure, I’ve had a few. I will occasionally get some frustrating lag that makes the game virtually unplayable, but I’ve put more than thirty hours into the multiplayer already and have only had that happen on a few matches. I think the kids today are calling the type of lag I get “rubberbanding”.

Another issue is that it sometimes seems like bullets and hits aren’t registering properly. Again, this was minor and it doesn’t seem to happen to me very often.

The Most Fun

So far, I’ve had the most fun when playing Battlefield 4 out of all of the multiplayer games I’ve tried. It haunts my dreams. I do wish more people would use their microphones, as it could be fun to squad up with some players and come up with actual strategies.

I pity any squad that has to put up with my ineptitude though. I did come in #2 on this match, but you can still see from my score that it wasn't much of a feat.

I am the Gomer Pyle of Battlefield. There are stormtroopers and Cobra infantry with better kill/death ratios than I have. I still love it though, and I am getting slowly better.

If you’ve been playing Battlefield 4, how do you like it? Feel free to share your gripes, and some of your cool war stories here in the comments.
